CHLORINE THE KILLING MACHINE
Another more destructive way humans have used chlorine is in WW1, and was known as mustard gas. Chemical warfare was introduced by Germany in 1915 in the third battle of Ypres. As most people were not expecting a giant gas of destruction they were unprepared and did not have gas masks, so they inhaled and had skin interaction with this compound. Note this is a slow and painful process, some people killed themselves to end the pain before reinforcement arrived. Roughly 1000 died and around 110 people who survived the attack told thier story as it was living hell. So how did this happen? What was this gas and how was it produced? The proper name for this compound was Sulfur Mustard (C4H8Cl2S). The production was a synthesis between sulphur dichloride and ethylene. SCl2(g)+2C2H4(g) ----) C4H8Cl2S(g). (For the specific effects chlorine and the damage the gas has on the body will be explained in detail in the effects on humans page.)
